Winter from Above
Winter transforms the familiar. From the air, snow-covered landscapes shed their identity, turning towns, fields, and forests into minimalist compositions. Shapes become symbols, colors recede, and what’s ordinary on the ground becomes quietly extraordinary when viewed from above.
Winter from Above is a collection born from the convergence of two passions: flying and photography. As both a seasoned pilot and visual storyteller, I find the airplane not just a vehicle, but an instrument—offering the freedom to explore light, geometry, and time from a higher vantage point. With the controls in one hand and a camera in the other, I navigate both flight and frame.
These images capture winter’s silence and structure—the way objects cast sharp shadows on blank snow, or vanish entirely into the landscape, leaving only outlines or impressions. In many, the environment becomes almost abstract, blurring the line between photograph and drawing, between document and design.
Each photograph was taken from a Cessna 172, my personal aircraft and flying studio. Most were captured while I piloted solo, maneuvering for the perfect angle, timing the light, and planning meticulously around weather, wind, and visibility. Sometimes a second pilot joined me for safety. Each flight is a mission—precision is everything, but spontaneity is always welcome.
The resulting prints are large, richly detailed, and designed for slow discovery. Printed on museum-grade Hahnemühle German Etching paper and available in a limited edition of 20, these works invite the viewer to enter the quiet, suspended world that winter reveals—when seen from above.

Just moments before the shutter clicked, a yellow Piper Cub passed overhead. Though that frame was missed, this image remains a serene and satisfying result of the pursuit.
